One of the things I love most about social media is the genuine connection that can develop from shared interests and creative appreciation. I can’t recall exactly when we “met” on Instagram, but I can absolutely remember when I first discovered decorator and purveyor of country living, Cynthia Weber‘s account, thanks to the most incredible – scratch that – ICONIC black walnut tree on her property. Arguably the most famous tree on Instagram (see below- incredible, isn’t it?)

Over the years, Cynthia and I have had fun connecting online over home design, gardening and everyday life. Having a background in art myself, I was very intrigued when Cynthia shared with me that her late uncle was prominent Canadian Artist, Peter Etril Snyder. Throughout his 50 year career, he became well known for his depictions of Mennonite life, landscapes and historical scenes in Ontario. After Snyder’s passing in 2017, Cynthia has had the honour of ensuring that his work continue on, which was his wish. Since launching the Snyder Gallery online, she has witnessed a delightful response to Snyder’s works.
Which brings us to today and an exciting announcement that a small group of original paintings depicting B.C. scenes is now available to the public! I was fortunate to have a sneak peek of the B.C. collection and I was quite intrigued by Snyder’s unique choices of the scenes and landscapes for his paintings. One painting, titled “Smartypants” really caught my eye, reminding me of myself as child — being Asian, the yellow overalls and the bowl haircut (LOL). The date that the painting was done defeated the possibility that it could have actually been me. Not to mention that I don’t think I had ever been to Vancouver’s Chinatown until an older age. Nonetheless, the piece spoke to me and I think that’s what is so moving about art. It evoked a feeling of nostalgia and an indescribable connection.
Here are some more photos of “Smartypants”, now proudly displayed in the living room of my home:
It is very special to display and share this original painting and participate in Snyder’s artistic legacy. A big thank you to Cynthia for introducing me to her uncle’s work! Truly the beauty of authentic connection on social media.
